What Is the Difference Between Eggnog and Milk Punch?

Egg nog

As you plan your holiday grocery list, you browse variations of family favorites. While picking your drink options, you decide to include more than hot chocolate to guests with an old but popular Christmastime sip: eggnog. Wait. Or is it milk punch? Hold on, what is the difference between egg nog and milk punch?

You have had both, at least, hearing both names for a variety of textures and flavors you have sipped on, you think you have. But what is the difference between holiday classics like eggnog and milk punch?

Difference Between Egg Nog and Milk Punch

Eggnog evolved from posset, a hot drink from medieval Britain that was curdled and flavored with spices. Posset was traditionally served in two-handled pots and was used as a cold and flu remedy. In the 13th century, monks added eggs and figs to posset to create eggnog.

Eggnog is a rich, sweet beverage traditionally made with milk, cream, sugar, eggs, and spices, often vanilla, nutmeg, and cloves. Whipped egg whites give it a frothy texture.

Homemade recipes may blend in vanilla ice cream to create a chilled drink. Some recipes call for condensed milk or evaporated milk in addition to milk and cream. Whipped cream can be added to the mixture for a frothier texture, as found in this recipe. Eggnog often includes sweeteners like sugar, brown sugar, and maple syrup. Toppings like nutmeg, cinnamon, whipped cream, or chocolate may be added for extra sweetness.

Eggnog is a popular drink to enjoy during the Christmas season.

Milk punch is another Christmastime favorite in the South. Originally served in a punch bowl, early punch recipes resembled posset, just like the origins of eggnog.

However, modern milk punch consists of milk or heavy cream, nutmeg, sugar, and vanilla extract, excluding eggnog’s required egg. This is why eggnog is sometimes known as egg milk punch.

Milk punch is shaken and served over ice. Our Holiday Milk Punch adds chai and cinnamon for a flavorful Christmas drink.

Both drinks come in a variety of options, including alcoholic or kid-friendly and hot or cold, so whichever you choose, you are sure to find something everyone will reminisce on.
